ptabTapping angus youngÿ)TAPPING LESSON Tapping is a technique that will increase the speed at which you play noticably, and there's really not much to it. It was made famous by the legendary Eddie Van Halen. To tap, make sure that the pick is between your index and middle finger, or another comfortable position. Fig. 1 will be an example. First make sure that one of your fret hand fingers is on the 7. Now, take the index finger of your pick hand, tap the 15 and pull off rapidly. Then immidiately pull off the 7. Repeat that. First take it slow (Fig.1) and then you can speed it up to Fig.2 and beyond. Some tapping examples and possible practice: Fig. 3- AC/DC's "Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap" Angus Young doesn't tap this, but it's good excersise nonetheless. How to play: Use the same technique as shown in the lesson, except tap the indicated notes and use your fret hand to pull off the others. Fig. 4- A small clip of Van Halen's "Eruption" How to play: Put your fret hand index finger on the 2, tap and pull off the 9, and then hammer on the five with the ring finger of your left. Keep repeating as necessary with the different notes. Fig. 5-Randy Rhoad's legendary "Crazy Train" solo. This is the most complex example of tapping in this lesson. How to play: Unlike the last examples, the tapping pattern changes here. Have your index finger on the 7 and tap the 14 with your right hand index finger. Now you must hammer on the 10 and then quickly pull off to 7 with your left.
