Thee is actually a nest just down the road down from us but no one told Simon King about that one! The only thing they really missed out on finding was the Shetland Bumble Bee. Onnyway I think Shetland has been presented to the population of Shetland and the world in a very good light. Already there have been coach loads of tourist driving through Bigton, a Swedish coach roared through the other day complete with the ubiquitous tour guide with microphone glued to mouth. Everyone in the coach seemed to be taking a nap! Shetland is such a lovely place, a bit like a good eye wash in that the light bathes all over you and the unhurried pace of life gradually takes away the impatient stresses that life down South instils into you. Everything is just taken at a nice slow pace and there is no hurry about anything. Gardens are bursting with life as well and my sunroom has four very healthy courgette plants growing it plus one pumpkin and lots of Blauhilde climbing beans which if successful will provide bumper crops of delicious blue beans, they turn green when cooked. I have tomatoes, radishes, lettuces and yet more beans in the garage. We have a large window which catches all the sun and they are doing very well. The growing season here is a bit shorter than elsewhere in the UK and I have to say it is amazing how quickly plants do germinate from seed here. The soil of course is quite rich in nutrients which helps. Of wild life is also abundant and there are loads of little bunny rabbits bouncing around. I went out shooting only last week with a friend of my neighbours. We only made a minor dent in the rabbit population but consequently have a large supply of fresh bunny in the freezer! I also went out fishing with them one evening to one of the local lochs.CHNKWKS HјџџџџTEXTTEXTЄ2FDPPFDPP6FDPCFDPC8FDPCFDPC:STSHSTSH<STSHSTSH<2SYIDSYIDP<SGP SGP d<INK INK h<BTEPPLC l<BTECPLC „< FONTFONTЄ<~STRSPLC "=:PRNTWNPR\=`FRAMFRAMМEˆTITLTITLDFDOP DOP `F" presented to the population of ShetShetland Diary I finally succumbed and started to mow our rather enormous lawn, partly motivated to by various comments from viewers of this website. Trouble was that it was an electric mower and the peerie plastic blade kept getting caught by the long (very) grass. It was a very hot day and I decided to buy a 4-stroke petrol mower. I know not very environmentally friendly but we do more than our share of recycling in all manner of shapes and forms. So consequently a couple of days later whilst my dear wife was ferreting through people s bags at the airport, I was pushing my deluxe purring beast around the garden chopping up the daisies and dandelions. I quite like the daisies actually but I have observed Shetlander s ruthlessly driving their purring beasts over beds of daisies. I said driving because I have seen at least three or four daisy mutilators perpetrating this very act. They sit on these rather large four wheeled machines instead of pushing them which is partly the reason for mowing the lawn - get some exercise!! Fair enough if you are a bit geriatric (and I must confess of having a few senior moments lately) then it is easier to sit rather than push - too posh to push perhaps!! Apart from that necessary purchase our household also acquired a new Hoover which is a bit of another purring beast and performs its cleaning role admirably. Well Springwatch has finished and truckloads of camera crew and location people departed our shores. Rather sad really because I think quite a lot of the UK was glued to BBC2 to see the jovial Bill Oddie and the pert yet trim Kate Humble and the loquacious Simon King strut their stuff. It was a splendid three weeks of entertainment and what a visual treat everyone saw. The otters and the killer whales plus the nesting It was amazing to be standing there at 1200 midnight in bright light and see every contour of the landscape and shapes under the water, and we haven t even had the longest day yet. Johnsmas Foy, the Summer Festival of Shetland, happens over the next two weeks. The theme this year is a Celebration of Sail as it coincides with two major yachting events, The Shetland Round Britain and Ireland Race and the Shetland-Bergen Races. There is also the Flavour of Shetland. This celebrates the very best of Shetland in terms of music, food, drink, crafts, culture and the great outdoors. Sadly all this envisaged celebration has been marred somewhat for the population of Shetland. On 6th June a number of Immigration Officials, supported by our local constabulary, swooped on an address in Lerwick and took away a young Thai man, Sakchai Makao, who has been living in Shetland for some years quite legitimately. The problem was that a few years ago he committed a misdemeanour under the influence of drink which resulted in him serving a sentence in prison. However he served his time and was taken back into the community and he served it well representing Shetland in the Island Games last year and worked as a lifeguard in the local leisure centre. Its seems that he fell foul of the massive putsch being made by the Home Office to identify illegal foreigners who had committed very serious crimes in this country and escaped judicial redress. It remains to be asked however why someone who served his time and was making a real input in the community should be penalised in this manner. Naturally everyone here is up in arms against the excessive zeal of Home Office minor burocrats. Petitions have been organised and Scottish Parliament lobbied with our MPs taking part in questioning the tactics of London Government officials. Many letters have been written expressing anger and dismay including support from prominent musicians. I cannot begin to contemplate the senseless expenditure, incurred by us the taxpayers, in sending a snatch force all the way up to these islands for such a draconian and inappropriate futile action. It also dismays me at the blatant abuse of human rights that has occurred here and one that has been committed by a Labour Government. Someone in the Home Office obviously has not done their homework right. I hope that sense will eventually prevail, exercised sensibly by the new Home Secretary, and Sakchai is returned to where he is to be welcomed with open arms. I didn t really want to use this diary to preach with but this demands some comment. The one thing about Shetland is that everyone more or less will speak their mind and they are not afraid to. Not much apathy here in that sense I suspect. Onnyway on with summer!
