WHERE IS HAPPINESS?

In the thinking of many, true lasting happiness is found in the things of this world.  Too many are looking for happiness in power, prestige, popularity, possessions, prominence, pleasure and one's position in life.  Therefore when these things are missing in one's life there is unhappiness.  Happiness, the kind that God offers, is not determined by these things.

Solomon of old learned this valuable lesson.  He sought for happiness in possessions and wisdom (Ecclesiastes 1:16-17) but it wasn't there.  He looked to pleasure, wine, houses, vineyards, gardens, orchards, silver and gold to bring happiness, but it wasn't there (Ecclesiastes 2:1-8).  Whatever he desired, it was his (Ecclesiastes 2:10); but still no happiness.  He summed it up by saying, "behold, all was vanity and vexation of spirit, and there was no profit under the sun" (Ecclesiastes 2:11).

Where is happiness found?  The answer is found in Ecclesiastes 12:13 as Solomon wrote, "Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter; Fear God, and keep his commandments; for this is the whole duty of man."

Where is happiness found?  The answer is found in Philippians 4:4, "Rejoice in the Lord alway, and again I say, Rejoice."  Can we not see the key to happiness in this verse?  Notice the phrase, "in the Lord."  That's where real lasting happiness and joy is found.  When you look at the early church in the book of Acts, you can read of their joy and happiness (Acts 2:46-47; 5:41-42) in spite of their problems and difficulties.  The reason for this was because of their right relationship with God.

In 1 Thessalonians 5:16, Paul wrote, "Rejoice evermore."  This a Christian can do. He belongs to Christ and has something to believe in and to live for (Philippians 1:21).  His sins have been forgiven.  Knowing this will bring joy now and eternal joy hereafter.

You can have this happiness now and in the hereafter by having faith (Hebrews 11:6), by repenting of sins (Luke 13:3, confessing Christ (Matthew 10:32), being baptized (Mark 16:16), and then living a faithful Christian life.
