PROMOTING "UNSOUNDNESS"
It is that time of the year when many
congregations are having gospel meetings and other special
events. These events are certainly one way by which we can make
known the Gospel to others. We must take advantage of the
opportunities to “preach the word” (2 Timothy 4:2). It is only by
hearing, believing and obeying the Gospel that one can be saved (Romans
1:16-17; Romans 10:17; John 8:24; Luke 13:3; Matthew 10:32; Mark 16:16;
2 Thessalonians 1:7-9). Therefore, we need to support, by our
prayers and presence, gospel meetings and other events in our area if
at all possible.
It may not be possible
to support every event in our area because of conflicting
schedules. If four or five congregations are having such
activities in the same week, then all could not be attended. One
may have prior commitments that cannot be broken and therefore would
prevent attending these events. It is also possible that we are
not able to support some gospel meetings and other events because of
the “unsoundness” of that congregation or the speaker or
speakers. To extend our support would be in violation of the
Scripture (Ephesians 5:11; 2 John 9-11). We must be careful that
we not “bid Godspeed” to those in error. Some bulletins and other
publications we receive as well as on some web sites, announcements are
made concerning gospel meetings, lectureships, workshops, etc.,
encouraging others to attend and support activities of those not “sound
in the faith.” My brethren, these things ought not to be.
We must not be promoting the activities of “unsound” congregations and
preachers.
We want to support
and “hold up the hands” of faithful brethren wherever they may
be. We must also stand opposed to those who by their teaching and
practice are striving to lead others into false doctrine (Romans
16:17-18).
